Tips for Unforgettable Places
Laos: Authentic Asia Without Haste
A Meraki Tours inspection trip took us to Laos, a country roughly three times the size of the Czech Republic but with only eight million inhabitants. From the very first moments, it is clear that time here does not move at the same pace as elsewhere. Laos does not feel rushed or hectic. On the contrary, calm, slowness and a natural simplicity are present everywhere, and gradually pass on to the visitor as well. It is a country where you learn to slow down, notice details and accept a different rhythm of life.
Laos: What to See? Stops on Our Inspection Trip
Vientiane: A Slow Entry into the Country
Our first stop was the capital, Vientiane, which lies on the banks of the Mekong. The city feels more like a quiet provincial centre than a bustling metropolis. It retains traces of French colonial architecture, while also carrying marks of the current political system, which shapes its atmosphere significantly. Vientiane is not a place of great contrasts or dramatic experiences, but rather a gentle introduction to the country. It is ideal for a slow landing after a long flight, a first Lao massage and a first taste of local cuisine.
Champasak and the Wat Phu Temple
From there, we continued south to the Pakse area. Nearby lies Champasak, a small and quiet town that is ideal for slow travel. This is where the Wat Phu temple complex stands, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a pre-Angkorian temple with an exceptionally powerful atmosphere. The site feels almost mystical, surrounded by nature and free of crowds. It is at its most magical at sunset, when the light changes and the whole complex takes on an almost otherworldly character.
Bolaven Plateau
The next part of the trip took us to the Bolaven Plateau, known mainly for coffee growing. This area produces most of Laos's coffee, with robusta grown at lower elevations and arabica higher up. Visiting the coffee plantations here, however, is not just about the coffee itself, but also about meeting local communities and understanding their daily lives. Besides coffee, the area grows
- cassava
- mango
- papaya and durian, whose distinctive smell is so strong that it is banned in some hotels. The whole area is also dotted with numerous waterfalls, offering a chance to swim and cool off in the tropical climate.
Si Phan Don – Four Thousand Islands on the Mekong
From the south, we moved on to the Si Phan Don area, known as the four thousand islands on the Mekong River. The islands of Don Det and Don Khon are among the places where life slows down noticeably. Time passes differently here, without pressure or hurry. Days are shaped by nature, the river and simple everyday activities. It is a place where you easily adapt to the local rhythm and let things flow.
Luang Prabang – Laos's Highlights in One Place
One of the highlights of the whole trip was our stay in Luang Prabang, a former royal city and today Laos's cultural jewel. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and combines Buddhist spirituality, colonial architecture and a surprisingly lively food scene. Luang Prabang is also an important centre of Buddhism, with dozens of temples that add to its unique atmosphere. At the same time, the country's historical context emerges very strongly here, for example at the UXO centre, which is a reminder that Laos was the most heavily bombed country in the world per capita during the war, and that unexploded ordnance still affects the lives of local people today.
A very powerful and humanly enriching experience was our visit to the Big Brother Mouse project, where foreign visitors meet local children and students and help them with English. This simple contact has a surprisingly big impact and shows how even a small activity can bring real change to the lives of local people.
Kuang Si Waterfalls and the Bear Rescue Centre
From Luang Prabang, we continued to the Kuang Si waterfalls, among the most beautiful in the whole of Southeast Asia. Turquoise lagoons, cascading water and the surrounding jungle create scenery that feels almost unreal. Nearby is also a bear rescue centre, which is well worth a visit and highlights the importance of nature conservation in the area.
Northern Laos: Mountains, Rivers and Authentic Villages
Nong Khiaw and a Two-Day Trek to the Hmong and Khamu Communities
The next leg of the journey led to the mountainous area of Nong Khiaw, where the Nam Ou River forms dramatic meanders surrounded by limestone mountains. Viewpoints above the town offer breathtaking views of the landscape and everyday life in the valley below. From there, we set off on a two-day trek to visit the local Hmong and Khamu communities. The route led through the jungle, with high humidity and demanding terrain, but the reward was an authentic stay in villages where a very simple way of life without modern infrastructure still persists.
Vang Vieng
The last part of the trip led to Vang Vieng. The town itself now feels rather contrasting, with a strong influence of foreign investment, but its surroundings offer exceptionally beautiful nature. Limestone mountains, swimming lagoons and cave systems create a landscape reminiscent of northern Vietnam. One of the most powerful experiences was a walk-through cave, where at times we had to crawl on all fours, and after two kilometres, hidden underground pools opened up where it was also possible to swim.
Laos left a very strong impression, not only through its natural beauty but also through its reality. It is a country of deep human stories that makes you reflect on the impact of history, war and current geopolitical developments. At the same time, it is a country where people live modestly, often without much hope of rapid change, but with natural dignity and calm.
This is exactly why Laos holds a special significance for us at Meraki Tours. We see it as a destination that perfectly illustrates the purpose of tailor-made individual trips. Every traveller can experience this country differently, slowly, actively, spiritually or through discovery, according to their own preferences and pace.
Laos with Yoga and Mindful Experience – An Upcoming Tour for Women
Part of our work is also creating tours for women that combine travel with yoga, relaxation and mindful experience. Laos proves to be an exceptionally suitable destination for this type of travel. Its calm energy, natural surroundings and Buddhist spirituality create ideal conditions for slowing down and recharging.
That is why we are already preparing a yoga tour to Laos, one that will combine morning practice in nature, a light sightseeing programme and plenty of space for rest, massages and soaking up the atmosphere of each place. The goal is not to see as much as possible, but to experience the country differently: consciously, slowly and in depth.
Laos is not a destination you simply visit. It is a country that gradually gets under your skin. And that is precisely where its greatest strength lies.
Laos awaits. Shall we go?
