The Swedes have one word for the right balance – lagom, meaning just enough, not too much, not too little. You will find the same balance across the whole country. Stockholm stands on fourteen islands, and from its centre both the water and the forest are just minutes away. In the morning you can have coffee by the water, in the afternoon enjoy the quiet among the pines, and in summer you can make the most of long evenings, as the sun sets late. Sweden stretches from the fields of Skåne, through the thousands of islands of the Stockholm archipelago, to the tundra of Lapland, where it never gets dark in summer and the sky fills with the northern lights in winter.
Give Sweden more than just a short stop and spend several days in this Nordic country. Set off on hikes along nature trails, and travel through the country from the historic town of Uppsala, through national parks, to the Arctic plains. Enjoy the local food, and relax in one of the boutique hotels or private cottages in the Swedish countryside.
Sweden is the seventh largest country in Europe and also one of the least densely populated on the continent, with fewer than twenty-five people per square kilometre on average. The result is a landscape that has long since disappeared in other European countries: forests without tourists, islands without development, and national parks where you are more likely to meet a moose than another traveller. A holiday in Sweden therefore works differently from a standard European trip – it works as a reset.
What to see and experience
In winter, head to Abisko National Park, where the "blue hole" effect gives you one of the best chances of seeing the northern lights, go dog-sledding, or ski in Åre. The blue hole effect is caused by a meteorologically stable, cloud-free zone above Lake Torneträsk – conditions here are among the best in Europe for observing the northern lights. The Aurora Sky Station, at the top of the local cable car station, offers night trips right up to the horizon.
In summer, swap skis for a kayak in the Skärgården (Stockholm archipelago), or walk part of the Kungsleden trail during the midnight sun. Kungsleden – the King's Trail – runs for 440 kilometres through four national parks in Lapland, from Abisko to Hemavan. Even a three-day section around Lake Tjäktjajaure shows Arctic terrain without tourist infrastructure; under the midnight sun, when the sun never sets, finding your way takes on a completely different dimension.
In August you can experience a kräftskiva (a traditional feast where crayfish is served), and in Stockholm enjoy the streets of Gamla Stan, or visit the Vasa Museum, home to an almost intact 17th-century warship.
Just tell us whether you are drawn more to the Arctic winter or the Nordic summer, and we will plan everything else for you as part of a tailor-made individual trip.
