Tips for unforgettable places

From lively Funchal to the wild beauty of the Saõ Lourenço peninsula

Madeira is not just a destination, but a true experience that combines natural beauty with a rich culture. This island offers adventure and tranquillity in perfect harmony, making it the ideal place for any traveller.

Funchal
The beating heart of Madeira

Your journey begins in the capital city of Funchal, home to over 100,000 inhabitants and offering a colourful mix of history and modern life.

Explore the local market, Mercado dos Lavradores, known for its wide variety of fresh fruit, flowers and fish. Visit the Botanical Gardens, where you can admire more than 2,000 plant species, and enjoy panoramic views from the Monte cable car, which takes you up to 560 metres above sea level.

The local market, Mercado dos Lavradores, known for its wide range of fresh fruit and fish, is not to be missed. Visit early in the morning to see the wide range of fish at the back of the market. A long narrow fish with big teeth will definitely catch your attention. It is a deep-sea fish, the dark lace fish, "espada" in Portuguese. Its meat is prized for its tenderness and few bones. Espada is often prepared fried, grilled or baked, either alone or in combination with banana or maracuja.

Botanical Garden of Funchal
The Jardim Botánico Funchal has been in operation since 1960 and specialises mainly in the flora of Macaronesia, with an emphasis on Madeira. Here you will find about 2,500 species of plants. Also worth seeing are the succulent garden, ornamental cultivars, the dendrology department and a number of useful plants. A large number of them are of South American origin, but there are also tropical and subtropical species from all over the world.

Cable car to Monte
How else to enjoy the beauty that the city of Funchal has to offer than from a cable car that will take you in 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city to Monte, a place where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic trip. The cable car overcomes a 560 metre difference and in addition to the breathtaking views of the surrounding area, you can also visit the botanical gardens, the park or the Nossa Senhora do Monte church. It is in this church that Charles I himself is buried, who was exiled in Madeira and died here in 1922. The Nossa Senhora do Monte festival is also celebrated every year and, in addition to the exuberant celebrations, includes a pilgrimage to this church.

Journey through the island
Wildlife, mountains and laurel forests

The journey through the island is an incredible experience. Every part is different, from the sunny southern slopes to the plateau in the heart of the island and the laurel forests to the wild northern coast, buffeted by strong winds.

Cabo Girão - The second highest cliff in Europe
CaboGirão is a steep sea cliff about 9 km west of the centre of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The highest point of the cliff is 580 m above the ocean level, which makes it the second highest in Europe (after the Preikestolen cliff in Norway - 604 m). At the highest point of the cliff there is a glass-enclosed tourist lookout, from where you can see the town of Câmara de Lobos to the east and Funchal beyond.

Câmara de Lobos
It is a small fishing village, famous for its colourful boats and traditional way of life. It lies in a picturesque bay surrounded by steep cliffs and is famous as a favourite haunt of Winston Churchill, who used to spend time and paint here. The village is also famous for its local drink 'poncha' and is ideal for those who want to experience the authentic atmosphere of Madeira away from the busy tourist centres.

Fanal Laurel Forest - A Mystical Experience
Visit the Fanal Laurel Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last remnants of the original Laurisilva forest in Madeira. This magical forest will enchant you with its ancient trees, some more than 500 years old, and the misty haze that creates a unique magical atmosphere.

Porto Moniz Pools - Natural Swimming
Refresh yourself in the natural pools of Porto Moniz, created by volcanic activity. These pools with clear water and ocean views offer a unique bathing experience right in the heart of nature. The water temperature is around a pleasant 20 °C.

Levada do Rei and Levada Verde - Scenic Trails
Take a walk along the levadas, Madeira's traditional irrigation channels. The Levada do Rei passes through lush vegetation and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, while the Levada Verde leads you past waterfalls and dense forests. The Levada do Rei is approximately 10 km long and offers a relatively easy route for hikers, as does the 6.5 km long Levada Verde.

Vereda Larano - Dramatic Views
This trail along the coast offers breathtaking views of the ocean and steep cliffs. Explore the wild beauty of Madeira and enjoy a unique trekking experience that takes you to places that feel like the end of the world. The trail is approximately 12 km long and is suitable for more experienced hikers.

Trek from Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo - The ultimate adventure
Take an unforgettable trek from Pico Areiro, Madeira's third highest peak at 1,818 metres, to Pico Ruivo, the island's highest peak at 1,862 metres. This challenging but stunning route, about 7 km long in one direction, takes you through the mountain ranges, offering panoramic views of the whole island. The trek is a challenge for any mountain lover.

Saõ Lourenço Peninsula - Wild Beauty
Your journey ends on the Saõ Lourenço Peninsula, where you will be amazed by the wild and untamed beauty of the landscape. This protected nature park is famous for its colourful rock formations and dry climate, which are distinctly different from the rest of the green island. It is an ideal place for hiking and discovering Madeira's unique flora and fauna.
